EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
